New schools named

Other schools will also open in Melton, Hume and Sunbury.

The names of four new primary schools set to open in Wyndham next year have been announced.

Following community consultation, almost 5000 submissions were made to help name 13 new schools opening across the state, with many names inspired by local Aboriginal language for flora and fauna.

The name Nearnung Primary School from the Bunurong word meaning ‘black cockatoo’ was selected to replace Tarneit Missen House Primary School.

Holyoake Parade Primary School will be known as Ngarri Primary School, derived from the Wadawurrung word meaning ‘sheoak’.

Riverdale East Primary School will be renamed to Tarneit Primary School, and Lollypop Creek Primary School will remain the same.

Education minister Natalie Hutchins made the announcement on August 26.

“It’s so important for families and young people to feel connected to their local schools, and we’re thrilled the community has had their say on these names that really reflect the areas’ culture, history and environment,” she said.

“It’s exciting to be one step closer to these new schools opening their gates to thousands of new students in our fastest-growing areas, as part of our promise to open 100 new schools across Victoria by 2026.”
