Construction is under way on a long-awaited senior school in Point Cook, set to open its doors in 2020.
Point Cook South Senior Secondary College, which will cater for years 10 to 12, will include a three-storey building with separate performing arts and physical education facilities, two mixed-use basketball/netball courts and a sports oval.
The school, which is being built to accomodate 1100 students, will be open for year 10 students next year and will stagger years 11 and 12 over consecutive years.
Enrolment boundaries for the new school are still being determined and will be made public later in the year. Similarly, a principal has yet to be appointed.
Meanwhile, it is likely the interim name Point Cook South Senior Secondary College will be changed before the school opens its doors.
As reported by Star Weekly, Labor first promised this school in the lead-up to the 2014 state election.
The state government faced challenges in acquiring a site for the school before securing land along Point Cook Homestead Road.
Altona MP Jill Hennessy said once complete, the school will give senior school students access to first-rate facilities.
“I’m excited that the community’s vision for a brand new senior school in Point Cook is turning into a reality and it’s great to see building is well under way on this much-needed local project,” Ms Hennessy said.
The school received $53 million in the 2018-19 state budget for building and construction works.
