The Spring Racing Carnival may be done and dusted at Flemington, but competition is just heating up at Werribee Racing Club.

The club kicked off its six-day season yesterday with a Members’ Race Day, to be followed by the Werribee Cup on December 13.

The Werribee Cup, historically raced on the Wednesday before the Melbourne Cup, has struggled to hold a consistent date since an international quarantine centre opened in the suburb in 2010.

New general manager Glenn Scott is confident that moving the Werribee Cup to December will be a winning formula.

“The club is excited about the Cup returning to a positive race date following a number of date changes in recent years,” Mr Scott said. “The Sunday date, combined with the Christmas theme, is already reaping benefits.”

He said there had been “significant” bookings for the event made over the past month.

Club chairman Leon Koch also expressed his sadness at the demise of Melbourne Cup veteran Red Cadeaux.

The much-loved horse was put down over the weekend after sustaining an injury in this year’s Melbourne Cup.

“Red Cadeaux had stayed here at Werribee no less than six times. Our sympathies are extended to trainer Ed Dunlop and the Red Cadeaux team,” Mr Koch said.
