New chapter for Wyndham libraries

Wyndham libraries have never been more popular, with more than one million people walking through the doors over the past financial year.

Council figures show that 1,035,131 people visited one of Wyndham’s five libraries during 2016-17, with the Point Cook library the busiest in the city, attracting 494,730 visitors alone.

It’s the first time visitor numbers had surpassed the million-people barrier.

The new figures were released a week after the state government allocated more than $1.35 million in library funding to Wyndham council.

Learning city portfolio holder Josh Gilligan said Wyndham libraries had evolved and become more than places for people to go and borrow books.

“On any given day you can see thousands of people heading to their local library to watch movies with their children, learn a new language or even uncover their family history,” Cr Gilligan said.
