Commuters battling it out for a carpark space at Williams Landing train station each morning will get some relief with the announcement of a new carpark only metres away from the station.
The state government last week said it plans to build 150 new car spaces on the land between Wallace Avenue and Palmers Road, which is presently being used as an informal carpark.
The area will be paved and include new lighting, signage and CCTV surveillance.
Altona MP Jill Hennessy said the new carpark was part of a larger project which would see 1500 spaces at train stations across the state.
“These extra spaces will be a Godsend for local passengers who drive to Williams Landing,” she said.
Wyndham council transport portfolio holder Glenn Goodfellow welcomed the news.
“It’s definitely a good thing,” he said. “It’s been a long and ongoing process, but we will finally see an informal carpark becoming a real carpark.”
He said council had been lenient in the past by not booking people who parked on the site.
Cr Goodfellow acknowledged the additional 150 carparks were not enough, but said they were a good start.
He said it was part of a holistic approach to solving public transport issues.
The new carpark will be free to use.
Construction will begin early next year, with the overall project expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
