If you’ve been involved in netball around Wyndham, the chances are you know Kerryn Flaherty.

The Werribee resident has played, coached and umpired netball in Werribee for a whopping 48 years. Her contribution to the sport is now cemented in history, with the new outdoor netball courts at Eagle Stadium named in her honour.

Ms Flaherty (pictured) and her good friend, the late Irene Cooney, were recognised for their contributions to the game last week at the unveiling of the Cooney-Flaherty courts.

“I’m very humbled, thankful and lucky,” Ms Flaherty said. “To see how sporting facilities have changed in Werribee over the past five decades, and to have this named after me.”

At 72, Ms Flaherty is looking forward to taking to the courts named after her as she umpires.

“I’ve got a passion for teaching girls and ladies how to play netball,” she said. “I love helping them and giving that opportunity to get together as a team and play. It’s a bit of fun.”

The stadium’s two show courts have been named the Nicol Championship Courts, in honour of the late John Nicol, who was chairman of the Werribee Basketball Association and the Werribee Sports Centre Limited.

The Patterson Courts, comprising three courts, were named after Roy and Ruby Patterson, who were longstanding members of the Werribee Badminton Association and founding members of the Werribee Table Tennis Association.

Other areas have been named the Challenge Courts, the WBA Legacy Courts, and Top Spin Court.
