Net gain for boys

Boys netball is gaining momentum in Wyndham.

The Wyndham Netball Association, which last year started up a boys team for teenagers keen on the sport, now has two boys teams – an under-11s and under-15s team – with almost enough boys signed up to the under-11s roster to field two teams in that age group alone.

The team also has a sponsor, and is known as the YPA Wolverines. Each Saturday morning the teams play against any girls team that is having a bye at Eagle Stadium.

Co-coach Louise Mason Saunders said the club was even fielding players from Altona and Essendon because they were the closest boys team in the north-west.

She said three members of the team were undergoing selection trials for the Victorian under-17 development team.

“The Wyndham Netball Association have been amazing in supporting it,” Ms Mason Saunders said.

“They’ve allowed the boys to both play in a mixed team [with girls] and also to play in the boys competition, and that means they can play two games in a day.”

Ms Mason Saunders said the goal was to eventually have a boys netball league.

“We appreciate it’s going to take time to go there, but we’ve grown from this time last year, and it can only grow from here.”
