My Wyndham: Singer and song-writer Zsuzsika Lencses lives in Manor Lakes. She chats with Alesha Capone.

When did your love of music begin?

It started when I was a toddler. I couldn’t speak English until I was about seven. My family is Hungarian-Polish, and Hungarian is my first language. We would travel back and forth, my father was a solider, but the funny thing was, I was singing in English. I was always singing along with Olivia Newton John and Tina Turner. I also loved John Farnham. There is also a long line of musicians on my father’s side of the family. My dad Csaba was a musician, mainly guitar but he could play any instrument – violin, piano, trumpet. He was in bands and duos in Hungary. I wanted to leave school at 17 to live my singing dream, but my Dad said ‘No, you must get a job’. I went on to be in bands and a backing singer. Along with that comes anxiety, I’ve had anxiety my whole life and have been through some traumatic experiences. I never felt good enough to be a solo artist.

You’re passionate about using your music to inspire people with a mental illness too?

In January 2017, my father passed away from heart disease. That was like a kick up my ass. I thought, ‘I really want to be a singer and song-writer.’ I also want to help people with a mental illness through my music. I want to empower people suffering a mental illness to get their lives together and not let it be a reason to give up. In September 2017, I joined Universal Music in Point Cook, and ever since then I’ve been recording and composing my own songs. My producer, and also my mentor there, is Michel Kroll. He’s absolutely amazing. I’ve released 10 songs, including an EP of five songs in May 2018. I’m about to release another single on November 21, Perfectly Perfect. It’s about self-worth and accepting yourself and other people, their flaws, baggage and mental illness, because they are perfectly perfect that way. I’m also collaborating with another artist, Anthony Sandry, and that’s due to come out in November. Next up, I want to audition for Australia’s Got Talent. I also want to be able to organise a concert locally, with supporting acts, to raise awareness and funds for headspace. That probably won’t happen until April.

What do you like most about Wyndham?

I’ve lived in the Werribee area for over 20 years. I now live in Manor Lakes. I love Manor Lakes, it’s generally such a quiet area, it’s got some lovely lakes and trees and they’re building a mini-plaza now at Coles. I love the school here too, Manor Lakes College, my kids go there.
