Vicki Minton became the principal of Baden Powell College, which includes the Derrimut Heath Primary School in Hoppers Crossing and the Tarneit P-9 campus, during term three last year. Ms Minton chats with Alesha Capone.
What was growing up in Wyndham like? Has the area changed a lot since then?
I grew up in Hoppers Crossing and went to Woodville Primary School and Westbourne Grammar for secondary school. I have many fond memories growing up here. It was a small town back then and had quite a country feel. There were no footpaths and only a few shops locally. I remember when the land where the plaza is now, was horse paddocks. I’ve seen the growth in population, increase of shops, parklands, restaurants and community facilities.
Where did you work before coming to Derrimut Heath Primary School and Baden Powell College?
I have always taught in the western suburbs. My educational philosophy is that all students should be given the best opportunities and education, as principal that is what is the basis of all my decisions. I have worked previously at Iramoo Primary School for many years and as a regional numeracy coach at Manorvale PS, Westgrove PS and Woodville PS. Prior to coming to Baden Powell College, I have been principal at Coburn Primary School in Melton South, I started there in 2014. I was very proud of what was achieved there, seeing a significant increase in student achievement data, establishing a calm and orderly environment and improving the school grounds and facilities.
What was it like, starting at Derrimut Heath Primary School and Baden Powell College as principal while the COVID pandemic was so prevalent last year?
It was an interesting time to start at a new school. I started at the beginning of the second lockdown and period of remote learning. It showed me how dedicated our staff are and how committed they are to providing our students the best opportunities.
What do you like about working at Derrimut Heath PS and Baden Powell College?
I have been extremely impressed with the students and staff at the college. Baden Powell College students are hardworking, have a strong moral compass and drive to make our community and the world a better place.
What are your hopes for the school’s future?
My hopes for the future at Baden Powell College is to continue to build upon the current foundations. Develop greater consistency across the campuses, ensure we are delivering a high-quality teaching and learning program and invest in the grounds and facilities.
