Lisa Clarke has lived in Little River for almost a decade. Prior to that, she resided in Laverton and Hoppers Crossing. Around 18 months ago, she became the owner of the Little River General Store. She chats with Alesha Capone.

What do you enjoy most about running the business?

I love the daily interaction with locals, visitors and tourists. Every day is different. From the early morning newspaper and coffee customers, to the cyclists and trekkers on their way to/from the You Yangs, to the kids buying their lollies on the way home from school.

Being one of the only businesses in a small town, do you also have a lot of interaction with the local community?

We’ve had many lost dogs handed in and have found their owners through Facebook, as well as mountain bikers in need of medical attention. We had one guy who came off second best with a kangaroo and needed an ambulance. The highlight of our year is our Christmas Eve Open Day, with a sausage sizzle provided by the Little River Lions Club, pony rides and fire trucks. All proceeds raised are for the Little River CFA.

How would you describe Little River to someone who has never been there?

Little River is an oasis of peace and tranquillity with a thriving local community and the best sunrises and sunsets I’ve seen. When you pull off the freeway and head towards the town, with the imposing You Yangs in the background, it feels like you’re entering a magical piece of heaven – a throwback to simpler times.

What would change about Little River, or the Wyndham area?

The number one need for the town is better roads. Too many are unsealed or incomplete, and this is a constant source of concern for the safety of our community.

Do you have a favourite place, or feature, in Little River?

By far the best feature of Little River is the locals. Everyone is so friendly, helpful and community spirited. We all look out for each other and the work of the volunteer groups in the town – like the Heritage Society, Lions Club, social club, sports club and CFA – are testament to the generosity of the selfless people who live here.

Are there any great events held in Little River?

Two highlights are the Annual Fair at Little River Primary School in March – the whole town turns out. Also, the Good Friday Appeal Auction at the sports ground, which has the best fish and chips in Victoria.
