Tagging at a Hoppers Crossing skate park will hopefully become a thing of the past, thanks to a group of students from The Grange P-12 College.
Fourteen year nine and 10 students banded together last week to create a mural at Mossfiel Skate Park in a bid to discourage graffiti.
Art teacher Brenton O’Callaghan said the project was a way of educating teenagers on the impact of graffiti on the community.
“It was about slowing down or preventing graffiti,” he said. “It also gave students confidence in their own art skills.
“Students were involved in workshops for five weeks, then spent three full days installing the mural at the park.”
Wyndham council’s portfolio holder for youth, Cr Marie Brittan, said a similar project was conducted at Presidents Park Skate Park in Wyndham Vale in 2013. Since then, incidents of graffiti and tagging had fallen by two thirds.
“This project should motivate and inspire students and their creative passions,” Cr Brittan said.
“It will leave a legacy, not only for the wonderful things young people are capable of, but also for the entire Wyndham community.
“We’re proud to be working in collaboration with such an enthusiastic and intensely creative group of students.”
Media students at the school created a video of the project, which will be used on the council website and on screens at the Civic Centre.
The project was funded by Wyndham council in partnership with the state government.
