Two young Wyndham Vale pupils grooved and jumped to the beat when their school held an online disco for students last week.

Five year-old Aubree and her six year-old cousin Owen, who are both in the same Grade Prep class at Iramoo Primary School, enjoyed the school-wide disco event on Friday.

The disco was held during the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s annual Book Week, which also ended on Friday.

For the disco, Aubree dressed up as Alice in Wonderland, from the 1865 tale by Lewis Carroll, and Owen was costumed as Mario, a fictional character created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto who is the title character of the Mario video game franchise and the subject of several children’s books.

Students at Iramoo PS also dressed up as book characters during the school’s online Monday morning assembly last week.

Throughout last week, students participated in several activities to celebrate Book Week and to highlight the importance of reading.

As well, children who attend the school created images of their favourite books and characters during visual arts lessons.

This year marked the 75th anniversary of Book Week, which was first held in 1945.

The theme for Book Week 2021 was ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’.
