Motorcyclists must obey the law – just like all other road users.
That is the message Westgate Highway Patrol is trying to get across to riders across Wyndham.
Patrol Sergeant Aaron Prentice-Evans has issued a warning to motorcyclists about speeding and safety while riding on Wyndham roads.
“They may think they’re above the law riding the way that they do,” he said.
“We will catch up with them eventually – they’ll bring themselves unstuck.”
With the weather warming up, Sergeant Prentice-Evans said the number of motorbikes on the road would be increasing.
“The concern is these riders haven’t been riding through the colder, wetter months and they’re out of practice,” he said.
“They don’t ease themselves in … often their confidence outweighs their abilities.”
He said Wyndham hot-spots for speeding motorcyclists included Sayers and Derrimut roads, as well as the Princes Highway.
Sergeant Prentice-Evans’ warning comes after a number of incidents on Wyndham roads involving motorbikes.
On Friday, a 65-year-old Werribee man was killed on Palmers Road in Truganina after his motorcycle struck the rear end of a car just before 5pm.
The rider died at the scene and his bike ended up on the wrong side of the road. Police are investigating.
In a separate incident on Sunday, October 16, a 37-year-old man was clocked travelling at 151km/h in a 100km/h zone on a motorcycle along Ballan Road in Quandong. His motorcycle was impounded and Sergeant Prentice-Evans said it was likely he would face charges.
“These sort of high speeds can result in the rider sustaining injury, or even killing someone else,” he said.
