Wyndham council has awarded a $1.42 million contract for works at the Lawrie Emmins Motocross Track in Laverton North.
The project will involve remediation of the existing motocross track soil profile, bulk earthworks, the installation of an irrigation system, fencing, footpaths, office buildings, machinery sheds, a disabled toilet and carparking.
The council awarded the contract to ACE Infrastructure. Construction is due to start next month.
Cr Peter Maynard said the works were “a long time coming” after the council first committed to “reactivating” the site in 2013.
He said awarding the contract was the first step towards re-opening the motocross track.
“I’m certainly pleased to say … that finally the first piece of the puzzle is in place to progress towards the track being re-opened,” Cr Maynard said.
“I know there will be many motocross enthusiasts both young and old, male and female, who will be very happy to hear this news.”
A council report stated that redeveloping the Lawrie Emmins Motocross Track would provide residents and visitors from outside of Wyndham with a safe place to learn and develop their motocross skills.
It stated that reactivating the track “should result in a reduction in illegal riding activity across the broader site.”
