International motorcycle champion Steve Martin has taken over operation of the new motocross track at Lawrie Emmins Reserve in Laverton North.

The new state-of-the-art facility is now open to the public.

Wyndham council’s city life director, Allison Kenwood, said she was confident the new track would be well-used by the motocross community.

The council has spent $1.6 million redeveloping the track, which has three different circuits – junior, intermediate and main – built to the latest Motorcycling Australia safety standards.

“We know that interest in motocross is growing in our community and across the state more broadly,” Ms Kenwood said.

“This track will cater to those interested in the sport, providing a safe and central location to have a ride.

“We have confidence in Steve Martin’s ability to run the operations of this track, with more than 30 years of industry experience and a strong career as a motorcycling champion.”

“Whether you’re skilled and experienced on a bike, or you’re just getting into it, the newly redeveloped Lawrie Emmins Motocross Track caters to all abilities.”

Mr Martin said he was thrilled the track had opened.

“It has been an amazing experience working with a council as receptive to the idea of opening a new motocross venue as Wyndham has been,” Mr Martin said.

“They have bent over backwards to help with all the back end stuff that people don’t see but my true satisfaction came when the first junior hit the track on our opening day, the beaming smile told me this was the right thing for the community.

“We plan to have community involvement and are really open to any ideas so please come down and say hello.”

Lawrie Emmins Motocross Track is operating in line with state government guidelines and COVID-19 restrictions.

The track is located at Lawrie Emmins Reserve, 2-88 Sayers Road, Laverton North.
