Hundreds gathered at Truganina’s Al-Taqwa Mosque last week to honour and farewell Australia’s most senior Muslim cleric, who died following a battle with liver cancer.

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Azeem Al-Afifi, who died in Northern Hospital on July 11, was remembered as being a “great catalyst” who brought people together. He was 48.

In accordance with his faith, a funeral was held the day after his death at Al-Taqwa Mosque – where he served as an Imam after migrating to Australia 18 years ago – followed by a burial at Fawkner cemetery.

In a statement, the Australian National Imams Council said Sheikh Abdel Aziem Al-Afifi had been widely recognised and respected by both the Australian Muslim community and wider Australian society.

“Sheikh Abdel Aziem Al-Afifi has dedicated himself to serving the Australian Muslim Community for over 20 years, being one of the founding members of ANIC, serving two terms as president, and most recently being elected the Mufti of Australia,” the statement read.

The sheikh was the youngest person ever to be elected to the role of Grand Mufti in March.

The council executive committee will act in the role of Mufti of Australia until a meeting is held within 15 days to determine a new leader.

Australian Multicultural Foundation executive director Hass Dellal said the Grand Mufti was a “great person” who would be sorely missed.

“He was a great catalyst and brought people together and that was his real strength.”
