More than 100 virus cases in the west

One hundred and two new COVID-19 cases have been detected in the western suburbs today in areas including Werribee, Tarneit and Altona North.

An additional 195 cases have been diagnosed in the north, in areas such Craigieburn and Broadmeadows.

Overall, 324 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 have been announced today by the state government.

There are 2166 active cases of COVID-19 across the state.

COVID response commander Jeroen Weimar said the rapid escalation of the virus in the north and west was partly due to entire households across the region being infected.

“We’re picking up new cases, and there are lots of cases sitting behind them who have already become infected over many, many days before,” Mr Weimar said.

He said extra vaccines were being sent to vaccination hubs across the west and north.

“We are really starting to surge significant state and local resources into the western and northern suburbs,” Mr Weimar said.

COVID-19 case numbers from the Department of Health show that 140 people in the 3029 postcode (Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina) have the virus.

Another 119 residents of the 3025 postcode (Altona East, Altona Gate and Altona North) have COVID.

Fifty-five residents of the 3030 postcode (Werribee, Werribee South and Point Cook) have the virus, along with nine residents of 3024 (Mambourin, Manor Lakes, Mount Cottrell and Wyndham Vale), nine residents of Williams Landing and one person living in Little River.
