Wyndham council will install a number of electric chargers across the municipality, in an effort to provide necessary infrastructure for electric vehicle users.

Three sites have been nominated to host EV chargers in the future, including the Bembit Bagrook Community Centre in Tarneit North, the Civic Centre in Werribee and the public carpark at 22 Synnot Street Werribee.

“Wyndham City is committed to taking action on climate change and supporting the Wyndham community as we transition away from fossil fuels,” Wyndham city director, planning and liveability, Peter McKinnon said.

“One way we are doing this is by installing Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations at various locations across Wyndham.”

Bembit Bagrook community centre and the civic centre will have 50kW DC Fast Chargers, which capable of charging two cars at a time.

The Synnot street location will feature two 22kW AC Chargers to service two parking bays.

“This will assist in providing the much needed infrastructure required to support a broader uptake of electric vehicles, noting that transport accounts for around 19 per cent of total CO2 emissions across Australia,” Mr McKinnon said.

“We see this as the start of a charging network in Wyndham and we are keen to see more public chargers across the network whether provided by council or others going forward.”

In 2020, council installed the first electric charger at the Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Community Centre in Wyndham Vale.

Mr McKinnon said council had received a $95,000 grant from the state government under the Destination Charging Across Victoria Program to assist with the installation of the chargers.

“The timing of the installation of these chargers are subject to hardware supply and a detailed design process,” Mr McKinnon said.
