Wyndham’s growth challenges were the topic of conversation recently when the assistant minister to the federal treasurer came to town.
Michael Sukkar sat down with Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard and councillor Heather Marcus to discuss the council’s federal government budget submission and priorities.
“We had a productive meeting on the need for a stronger focus on fast-growing outer municipalities like us and our priority infrastructure, road and transport projects,” Cr Maynard wrote in a Facebook post.
“It was great to also have the opportunity to share stories of the incredible impact rapid population growth is having on our community.”
As reported by Star Weekly, Wyndham council has called on federal funding for new Regional Rail Link stations at Black Forest Road and Davis Road; funds for the support services hub in the Wyndham Justice Precinct; and continued funding for 15 hours per week of kindergarten, among other projects.
Cr Heather Marcus, who helped to organise the meeting after attending a Diwali celebration hosted by the Multicultural Liberal Business Club in November, said Mr Sukkar indicated he would be happy to bring up some of Wyndham’s issues in Canberra.
“My trip to that function that night certainly paid dividends,” she said.
“He [Mr Sukkar] drove down here and he had a look around the main street of Werribee before the meeting so that he had a feel for the area, and we discussed certain items that are all about our challenges and opportunities, and he was extremely interested in it all.”
Mr Sukkar added: “We are keen to support the growth and economic opportunities in Wyndham.”
