Milestone for western Melbourne job seeker program

Not-for-profit employment services organisation MEGT has recently reached a milestone, helping 100 job seekers secure a job through its Enhanced Services (ES) program focusing on the western suburbs of Melbourne.

Launched on July 1 under the federal government’s Workforce Australia network, the program has delivered services across offices in Werribee, Footscray, Sunshine, Altona and Melton and engaged about 4500 people so far.

MEGT Workforce Australia operations manager Maria Griffin said the program has successfully helped connect job seekers with employers since launching in July.

“We’ve been able to successfully speak to all of our participants since then,” she said.

“MEGT has relationships with over 6000 people across the region.”

Ms Griffin said their support services also included helping job seekers receive the appropriate qualifications or accreditations for a specific job, such as a forklift license.

“We give that assistance,” she said.

“We also deliver apprenticeships and traineeships across the west.”

According to the latest data from the National Skills Commission, the unemployment rate in Wyndham as of June is 4.5 per cent.

Sheep wool broker and buyer Fox & Lillie Rural, which has an independent wool showfloor in Laverton North, has employed Brett Gartner as the show floor storeman for the past four months through the ES program.

Fox & Lillie Rural national wool brokerage manager Eamon Timms said MEGT’s services through the ES program helped them employ the best individual for the position.

“We’re very happy with the quality of the candidates they put forward to us,” he said.

Ms Griffin said the main aim of the Workforce Australia initiative and the ES program was delivering personal assistance to ensure jobseekers secure the right job for their skill set.

“It’s great to work with people like Fox & Lillie Rural,” she said.
