Melbourne will be host of the next World Tram Driver Championship in 2027, bringing the global spotlight to the world’s largest tram network for the first time.
This comes as the World Tram Driver Championship took place this month in Vienna, where two tram drivers and their coach represented Australia and versed 24 other countries to take out the top spot.
Drivers competed in challenges to put their driving skills to the test, with disciplines ranging from precision stopping and speed control.
Melbourne’s tram network is the largest in the world, with more than 250 kilometres of double track and over 5000 daily services moving almost 200 million passengers every year.
In 2022, Australia was the first ever non-European country chosen to compete in the European Tram Driver Championships in Leipzig, Germany.
Public and Active Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams said hosting the championship will showcase the important role trams play in Melbourne.
“We’re excited to welcome the world’s best tram drivers to our iconic network, and cheer on our Tramaroos in 2027,” Ms Williams said.
