Teenager Jerod Teh is the only student from a school in the west to have received an Outstanding Award in the state junior division of a prestigious mathematics competition.

Jerod, 13, is a year 8 student at Good News Lutheran College in Tarneit.

Along with thousands of other students across the nation, Jerod sat the University of Melbourne’s annual School Mathematics Competition in May.

The university last week announced the Victorian junior division prize winners in the competition, including first, second and third place, along with around 20 Outstanding Award winners from years 7 and 8.

“Although I prepared for the competition, I was shocked as first to receive such an outstanding honour,” Jerod said.

“I enjoyed the competition although it was very difficult, there was a great sense of achievement when I answered each question.“

He said that Maths was his “absolute favourite” subject at school.

“I enjoy Maths because the knowledge you gain can be used in the future to help better society,” Jerod said.

He said he was proud to represent the west in the maths competition and also Good News Lutheran College.

“I would like to thank the college for giving me the opportunity to join the competitions and the teachers for their support,” he said.

Jerod said he hoped to study architecture, bio-medicine or engineering at university.

Another Good News Lutheran College year 8 student, Pearl, has been selected to represent Victoria in the National Maths Talent Quest, out of 370 entries from 50 schools.
