You’re never too old to have a go – that’s the message from the new Werribee Masters women’s football team that will take to the field later this month as one of six sides competing in the inaugural Women’s AFL Masters competition.

Fresh off the success of the AFL Women’s League, women aged in their early 30s and beyond are now picking up the footy and kicking their own goals.

Werribee player Lianne Salerno said the format of the game was much the same as for men’s league.

Games consist of four 15-minute quarters, with modified rules including players not being allowed to tackle to the ground and speccy marks being banned. There are weekly training sessions, but these are not compulsory.

“The tackling rules have been modified a bit, to obviously protect an ageing body,” Ms Salerno said with a laugh.

Ms Salerno said there was likely to be six home-and-away rounds in the competition and a small finals series.

The Werribee Masters women’s football team will host a come-and-try day at its home ground, Wyndham Vale Reserve, Honour Avenue, Wyndham Vale, from 10.30am-noon on Saturday, April 7.

Victorian Women’s Football League stalwart Kerry Saunders will lead the training session.
