A unique primary school program is teaching students how to become young philanthropists.

Students from Manors Lakes College, Wyndham Park Primary School and Our Lady of the Southern Cross Primary School have spent the past 16 weeks taking part in the Kids as Catalyst program, which involves making a difference in their community by partnering with a local organisation.

At Manor Lakes College, 11-year-old Akshita was part of a group that worked with YMCA Northern Interchange which built sensory boxes that were used to help special needs children calm down.

“I really liked that we got a chance to participate … it really felt like we’ve made our community a better place,” she said.

Fellow student Bailey helped to host a bake sale, with all proceeds going to Second Chance Animal Rescue, while 11-year-old Jett painted portraits of elderly residents at Manor Lakes Aged Care home to decorate their rooms.

Bailey said it was great to learn how to help others in the community.

Jett added: “It showed us we should be grateful for what we have.”

Kids as Catalyst co-creator Andrea Rieniets said: “This is not something young children are used to doing, approaching adults and asking to help the adults.

“It’s usually the other way around. It’s a seismic shift in perception, both of themselves and their role in the world.”
