Police are hoping to identify a man following an assault in which a woman was spat upon, after she boarded a Laverton-bound train last month.

Investigators have been told the victim, a 32-year-old Brunswick woman, boarded the train at Southern Cross Station about 8.10pm on May 30.

The woman took a seat in the second carriage and observed a male littering on the train.

The male approached the woman, became aggressive and spat on her.

Police have released an image of a man who they believe can assist with their inquiries.

The man is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged between 40 and 50 years old, with short brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with who recognises the man is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au
