Making their own family through fostering

At the beginning of this year, Chris and Amanda went from living in a two person household to a five person household overnight.

The Wyndham Vale couple, who had just become foster carers, welcomed their first foster kids, three siblings aged between nine and 11 who will stay in their care until they’re at least 18.

The couple, who had always planned to adopt, switched to fostering when they realised just how big the need for carers was.

“The amount of people on the wait list for adoption is huge, but there’s not many kids up for adoption, whereas foster care is the other way around – there’s so many kids that need it, but there’s not enough carers,” Amanda said.

“It was a very easy decision once we found that out.”

Chris added: “It is just the two of us in a large home. We’re not rich by any means but we get by, and we have empty beds and at the end of the day, that’s all these kids need – a warm bed and a hot meal. It’s amazing what a world of difference that can make, even if it’s only for one night.”

The couple say they have been impressed by the level of training and support they’ve received since first starting the process in October last year and already plan on extending their home to accommodate their growing brood.

To become a foster carer you need to be 25 years or older, have a spare bedroom, and be patient, understanding and committed.
