Budding fashion designers are busily putting finishing touches to their creations in the lead-up to next month’s Australia Fashion Awards.
Year 12 MacKillop College students Agoum Mashak, Daria Messina, Alwel Magek, Georgia Zulian and Katherine Nolan will present their final designs as secondary students before they embark on their chosen careers in fashion.
The five girls, who all study product design tech (fibre), have been working on their pieces since the end of last year.
Georgia, who placed second in the day-wear category two years ago, is hoping her Spring Racing Carnival-inspired cocktail frock and matching headband will be a winner.
Alwel, competing for the first time, is giving a traditional masquerade garment a modern makeover.
“I’m excited and nervous at the same time … but it’s my last year at school and I wanted to have a go at everything,” she said.
The Fashion Awards showcase the works of emerging designers and design students from secondary colleges, TAFEs and tertiary colleges, from Australia and overseas.
Awards director Heather Marcus said the standard of entries was very high.
“We have a very strong field of entries from the TAFE categories and we’ve got designers coming in from Darwin and New South Wales,” she said.
“It’s a great platform for secondary college students … it really gives them good training before they go into the TAFE colleges.”
The Fashion Awards are presented on October 9 at Lakeside Banquet and Convention Centre, Taylors Lakes. Bookings: 9741 5146.
