Yoga, tai chi, woodworking, cake making, gardening, and painting are among of the
activities on offer to Wyndham residents during Neighbourhood House Week which begins on May 8.
Neighbourhood houses and community centres throughout Wyndham will be involved in the week, which is an annual celebration of the role they play in promoting wellbeing and bringing people together.
The importance of that role is reflected in this year’s theme: ‘Locals Connecting Locals.’
Those connections will be made at a range of free or low cost classes, workshops and activities, kicking off with a community party at Penrose Promenade Community Centre on Saturday and finishing with a Mother’s Day Market at Saltwater Community Centre on Sunday May 14.
Wyndham Mayor, Susan McIntyre, said over 31,000 activities and programs were run by the municipality’s neighbourhood houses and community centres last year.
She said these organisations were more important now than ever before.
“These programs help our residents stay connected, active, learn new skills for work or
enjoyment and get support.”
“At a time when people are struggling with an increased cost of living, it’s excellent that our
community centres can be a safety net for people in strife,” Cr McIntyre said.
