Fifteen young Wyndham sports stars have received $500 grants from the Australian Sports Commission to help them compete at state, national or international competitions.
Among recipients of the Local Sporting Champions award grants were four members of Western Athletics – Sophie McMinimee, Julia Bourke, Liam Cashin and Declan Macaulay.
The club will celebrate its 20th anniversary later this year.
The grants are handed out to sports stars aged 12 to 18 to help them with the costs of travel, accommodation, uniforms or competing.
They are awarded three times a year, and some of the local recipients received their funding last year.
Lalor MP Joanne Ryan presented the grant recipients with certificates recognising their achievements at a presentation night last week.
Ms Bourke, 17, said the grant had allowed her to pay for flights last March to compete at national junior championships, in which she took part in the shot-put.
Ms Ryan said this year’s ‘local sporting champions’ were an impressive group.
“We should be proud they have represented our community in endorsed state, national or international sporting championships, or at a school sport Australia state or national championship,” Ms Ryan said.
