Local artist honours farmers

Werribee artist Linda Venema has unveiled her latest painting at Brothers on K in Werribee South.

The painting is an ode to the agricultural history and character of Werribee South, depicting a man riding a quad bike through his farm.

Venema said the man in the painting, like many of Werribee South’s farmers, is of Italian heritage and that its placement in an Italian restaurant was symbolic.

“I like to work on anything to do with real life and nature and to make everyone smile,” she said.

Touching on her artistic process, Venema said she only ever begins with red, blue, yellow, white and black as base colours, and then blends her own colours to suit the project she is undertaking.

”That way I get as close a colour to what I need as possible,” she said.

Once it’s time to begin, the artist said she establishes the background while leaving the subject, the man on the quad bike in this case, until last.

“The detail on the shirt took the longest time,” she said

According to Venema, the process itself and the positive influence it can have on others, both as admirers and creators, is the most rewarding part of being an artist.

“I love the process of creating art, it always amazes me especially when it works out as good or better than I expect.

“I also enjoy the reactions of those who view it and I like to inspire and encourage others.“
