The Green family believes in giving – mainly in the form of blood.
Just last week, the family of six from Little River made the short trip to Werribee to donate via the Red Cross.
The trip led to mother Nicole Green’s 100th donation, while for 16-year-old Patrick it was his first.
Nicole first donated in 1988.
“I think it was the people around me at the time that got me to donate,” she says.
“They were donating and I thought it was a good idea to help others if I can.
“My husband also donates, and the kids have grown up seeing us giving blood; they’d often come with us.
“We never made them do it but encouraged them, and now they donate themselves.”
Nicole says the family has always been involved in the community, through the Lions Club, Scouts, and the CFA, and they see their donation as another way to contribute.
“It’s just doing something for the community,” she said. “If one day somebody you know or love needs blood … you know it’s there.”
To anyone who may be considering donating, Nicole encourages them to give it a go.
“It doesn’t hurt,” she said.
“You might lose an hour out of your day, but it’s well worth it … and you get a free biscuit at the end.”
The Red Cross Donor Centre in Werribee is at 7 Bridge Street.
