Lions club looking to fill pack

The Werribee Lions Club has existed in Wyndham since 1961, but the community group is at risk of extinction.

Club Chair Lou Scholten says the group currently has about 28 members, but Lions Club are on the hunt for more.

“We are an older group, unfortunately, we are all getting to the stage where we’ll have to look for retirement,” he said.

“I’m 78, quite a few people in the club are over 80 so we have to slow down, we need younger people in the organisation to be able to continue on.”

Mr Scholten said the group has raised about $1.5million since their inception to help all kinds of people in need.

“We look after a lot of things, the elderly in our society, we do food banks and community services…during Christmas time we sell cakes,” he said.

“We’re about to launch a new program as well called ‘Breakfast at School’ because there are children that come to school hungry.”

The Lions Club is a “great organisation to belong to” and Mr Scholten hopes people want to get involved.

You need a sense of community spirit, because there are plenty of people in Wyndham who still have a need for us.

The Lions Club meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month.
