It’s not every day you get to making a roaring debut.

Visitors to Werribee Open Range Zoo will be in for a treat this week, with the zoo’s 10-week-old lion cubs venturing out on public display from tomorrow.

The four lion cubs, who were born on December 13, will start coming out for short periods with mum Nairibi during the day, most likely in the mornings.

However, zoo keepers warn that viewing times may vary due to the cubs’ need to rest and to spend time in the dens getting to know the rest of the pride, including dad Johari and 16-month-old half-brothers Kubwa, Kashka and Kito.

Zoo keeper Katherine Quinn said that the team were thrilled with the health and development of the cubs.

“Four cubs is quite a large litter size, so we are really pleased to see that all four cubs are feeding well and putting on weight as they should,” Ms Quinn said.

“They are very curious, climbing up over the rocks and logs, wrestling with one another and pouncing on mum’s tail.

“Nairibi already has her paws full, in trying to keep everyone together and make sure that they don’t stray too far.”
