Like a Doig with a ball

In the Doig family, soccer is practically a religion.

When the Doigs moved to Wyndham from Scotland in 1980, patriarch Ross joined the Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club within the year, and son Lee played his first game when he was five years old.

Both men have since retired from the game, but remain active in the club.

Lee, who is a life member and is part of the social committee, is organising the club’s annual past players, fans and sponsors day, at Grange Reserve on July 29.

The annual event, which is now in its fifth year, will include what’s shaping up to be a top-of-the-table clash between Hoppers Crossing and Altona City.

Lee said the club, which used to play out of Mossfiel Reserve, used to be much smaller than today’s club, which boasts more than 500 members across a number of teams.

“It’s amazing how much it’s grown,” he said.

“For myself, and dad as well, we’ve made friends for life through the club – it almost is like family.

“My dad’s still best friends with people that he met almost as soon as he got off the plane through the soccer club and I’ve got mates that I’ve had since that first team I played in.

“It’s a really good family club.”

Lee is hoping his two sons will one day also become life members.
