The Liberal party’s pledge to develop a Special Economic Zone in East Werribee has been hailed by Wyndham council as an “extremely positive initiative“.
Businesses established in the zone will pay no payroll tax for at least four years, receive discounted land tax and stamp duty, and be able to apply directly to the Planning Minister for expedited planning approvals.
Wyndham mayor Susan McIntyre said council welcomed the announcement, as it would create an incentive for companies to set up and operate in East Werribee through a significant reduction in their establishment and ongoing costs.
“Getting the East Werribee Employment Precinct activated and creating jobs is the number one priority for Wyndham council,” she said.
“Council wants to see the area activated for job creation and [the] announcement is a kick start in the right direction and will be welcomed by residents who want to live and work locally.”
The East Werribee precinct sits on 775 hectares of land bordered by Hacketts Road and the Princes Highway, owned by the state government.
“It’s a parcel of land that is so important to the liveability of our city,“ Councillor McIntyre said.
“We need to secure this parcel of land and ensure that is part of Wyndham’s future prosperity.”
Cr McIntyre said activating East Werribee would deliver new jobs in the municipality and create a new hub for employment, education, and community.
“With Wyndham’s population set to reach 500,000 over the next 20 years, the number of people looking for work is expected to increase to 200,000,” she said.
“Right now, two in three working Wyndham residents leave the city every day to go to work.
“Delivering local jobs and industry will allow families to ‘live locally’ and experience a 20-minute neighbourhood.
“Activating East Werribee will not only boost the state’s economy, but will support existing community needs, absorb future population growth, and build a more prosperous, productive and sustainable Wyndham.”
