Les Porter knows all too well how much the Salvation Army can help those in need.
Hit by a car 28 years ago, the Hoppers Crossing resident found himself with his right leg broken in seven places and a head injury that left the left side of his body immobile.
“After years of having a good job, I found myself with no wages … learning to walk again,” he said. “It was mentally and physically demanding.”
The Salvation Army helped him financially while he was recovering and now Mr Porter is paying it forward.
For a seventh year, he is riding 1000 kilometres on his tricycle to raise funds for the Salvos.
The Wyndham 1000, as he calls it, is about raising money that will support the homeless, the disadvantaged and those at risk in Wyndham.
Salvation Army Wyndham City captain Kim Haworth said Mr Porter was an incredible person with a huge community heart.
“Through the Wyndham 1000 … Les participates in and enables us to provide many services and programs that positively impact people in Wyndham,” she said.
Since its inception, the Wyndham 1000 has raised almost $80,000 for the Salvation Army.
The Wyndham 1000 will start on October 1 from Big W at Pacific Werribee and end at the same spot at 10am on October 29.
