A developer will provide 3.5 hectares of land for a Truganina school, instead of paying a GAIC charge.
Planning minister Richard Wynne has announced that Villawood Properties will supply the land for a primary school, rather than paying the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) levy, which is usually charged to developers building new communities.
The land is near the corner of Woods Road and Dohertys Road, in the Albright estate.
The agreement means Villawood will build roads to the site and ensure it is serviced with utilities such as gas, electricity, water, sewerage and telecommunications.
The school will not be built until it is funded by the state government.
But the agreement means that once the school is funded, the Victorian School Building Authority will be able to build on the site immediately.
Villawood Properties executive director, Rory Costelloe said the agreement would cater for the growing demand for educational facilities from families moving into the area.
“This landmark agreement will pave the way for early delivery of infrastructure that would ultimately benefit families living in Melbourne’s west,” he said.
“One of our largest purchaser groups is new families and often their top priorities is access to good education for their children that is close to their home.
“We congratulate the Andrews government on embracing this initiative which provides land for a local primary school at Albright, and certainty for our residents.”
The school land is located next to a site which Wyndham council has earmarked for a community activity centre and district open space such as sports fields.
The Albright estate, on Dohertys Road, is set to include almost 500 houses once construction is completed. More than 250 houses have already been sold.
