Kinder places in short supply

Truganina and Williams Landing families are struggling to secure kindergarten places close to home.

A Wyndham council report on kindergarten services reveals that while there was an average of 42 children on the waiting list for kindergarten places in the municipality in 2015, there was an uneven distribution of available places and demand.

There were, on average, 60 available kindergarten places throughout 2015.

“There are places available in Little River, but this is difficult for people who do not live in the area,” the report stated.

On the flip side, there were not enough places to accommodate demand in Truganina and Williams Landing.

There are 130 children already on the waiting list in the area, and the 165-place Arndell Park Kindergarten – the only kindergarten in the two suburbs – is already at maximum capacity.

Work has not yet commenced on a 165-place temporary kinder on Leakes Road, Truganina, which is likely to be open in time for term 3 this year.

The council is also seeking state government funding for additional kindergarten sites and upgrades to centres across Truganina, Williams Landing, Wyndham Vale and Tarneit.

Acting chief executive Bill Forrest said the council was committed to ensuring as many children as possible could go to four-year-old kindergarten.
