Kids commemorate Jesus

The grade 5 pupils at Lumen Christi Catholic Primary School participated in a Stations of the Cross display to mark the beginning of the Easter holidays.

The school’s religious leader, Enrika Barron said The Stations of the Cross represent one of the significant days, depicting Good Friday, the last day in Jesus’ life.

“They’re going from station to station, and at each station our grade fives they have a freeze frame on how they reenact, they’re all dressed in costume, and then we have a narrator who reads a little bit,” Ms Barron said.

“Each grade comes up and sits down, the narrator reads what’s happening at the station and freeze frame is there, and then they say a little prayer together and they reverently and very respectfully move around to the next station.”

Ms Barron said the students are asked to look back at their faith and traditions and evaluate how it can be applied to current times.

“When we did Holy Thursday, the fact that Jesus was washing the disciples feet, Jesus was saying ‘I’m not better than anybody else, we are all equal and we need to look after each other’.”

Ms Barron said the school’s Easter celebrations were an important time to recognise Jesus’ message.

“The children go through the significance, meaning, the tradition, the symbols, the rituals, and every year we do something to remember this important time in the church’s calendar,” she said

“Next year, we’re going to do something different. There’s an opportunity for the school to gather, remember our faith, our tradition, we invite our parents, our community and it’s a prayerful experience.”
