Khan suspended

Wyndham council has banned Cr Intaj Khan for four weeks for breaching its Code of Conduct.

Mayor Henry Barlow said the council had resolved to remove Cr Khan from any position where he represented the council, including council meetings.

The decision comes after the council received complaints in relation to comments made by Cr Khan online and in the media in June.

Cr Khan will also be required to make a public apology for his conduct at the next ordinary council meeting that he attends in his capacity as a councillor.

Cr Barlow said: “Having received complaints about Cr Khan’s conduct, Council appointed an independent arbiter to investigate the complaints and recommend certain actions to Council – a process which is outlined in the Wyndham Councillor Code of Conduct’s Dispute Resolution Procedure.

He said that Cr Khan was found to have breached two sections of the code, relating to councillor conduct principles and communication protocols.

“As elected representatives, we have specific duties to fulfil and any breaches of the Wyndham Councillor Code of Conduct must be treated seriously,” Cr Barlow said.

“The community rightfully has expectations when it comes to how we as councillors conduct ourselves and that is why processes such as this are necessary.”

Star Weekly is contacting Cr Khan for comment.
