Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food pulls into town at Point Cook on Friday, September 25, to promote the English foodie’s drive to bring back healthy eating on tight budgets.
The mobile kitchen tours communities, teaching locals cooking skills and healthy eating, as well as passing on Jamie Oliver’s tips for preparing creative menus on a shoestring.
Stockland’s town centre manager Frank Pizi said The Good Foundation initiative, the umbrella organisation of the Ministry of Food, was a proven program aimed at getting people off takeaway food and back on to healthy eating habits.
Ministry of Food Australia says diet-related diseases are the single biggest killer in this country, with 25 per cent of all deaths due to poor nutrition.
The program has been evaluated by both Deakin University and the University of Melbourne. Results show participants who complete the cooking course have a better understanding of the importance of good nutrition, are more confident in the kitchen, consume more vegetables and spend less on takeaway foods.
Two five-week courses are on offer at Point Cook, each course involving one 90-minute class per week.
Courses cost $20 a session, $10 concession, and $15 for student cardholders.
