A Werribee crafter is all smiles after her work was singled out at a national scarf-making festival.
Beverley Cox received a highly commended in the felted category of the National Wool Museum’s Scarf Festival for her creation called In this, the Planet Europa.
Working to the festival theme of Galaxies: a textile journey to infinity and beyond, Ms Cox employed the art of nuno felting, combining silk and wool to give her scarf a boucle effect. She said it took about three hours to make.
“It does get the creative juices flowing, to get it to fit the theme.”
A scarf-festival veteran, Ms Cox also does a lot of quilting and specialises in creating memory quilts for people wanting to incorporate bits and pieces from a loved one.
National Wool Museum director Padraic Fisher said nearly 300 people entered this year’s competition.
“The number and quality of entries for the Scarf Festival just gets bigger and better each year – such is the strength of craft in Australia,” he said.
“We are blessed to have practitioners who insist on keeping the art of handmade alive and well.”
The scarves, including the winning entries, are on display at the National Wool Museum in Geelong until August 27.
