Western United’s home ground in Tarneit is on the cusp of officially being known as Ironbark Fields after Wyndham council voted to approve the name and submit it to the Registrar of Geographic Names at a meeting on April 23.

Referring to the eucalyptus tree of the same name, Ironbark was the name chosen to be applied to the field and pavilion at Western United’s home ground during a public poll conducted from December to February.

Wyndham councillor Peter Maynard, said the naming process for the site began in September 2023.

“We began community consultation calling for a naming theme and proposed names

back in September, in keeping with our Geographic Naming Policy,” Cr Maynard said.

“We next took the proposed names to a community vote in December 2023 to

February 2024 and following feedback entered a public notice period from February

to March.”

After council first approved the Ironbark name at a meeting February 24, it was subject to a 30 day public notice period where no submissions opposing the name were made.

Cr Maynard said the naming process was now in the home stretch.

“The names will be submitted to the Registrar of Geographic Names for consideration and if accepted we have two more steps – gazetting the names before officially registering them,” he said.

If approved, the venue currently known as the regional football facility will become Ironbark Fields and the building overlooking the main pitch will become Ironbark Pavillion.
