New data shows tourists visiting Victoria spent a record $40 billion last year.
The data received from Tourism Research Australia’s National Visitor Survey and International Visitor Survey shows total tourism spending in Victoria increased by up 5.8 per cent in 2024, with visitors from India accounting for much of the growth.
Victoria remains the most popular destination for Indian visitors to Australia with 223,000 coming to the state last year, staying 12.4 million nights and spending $714 million.
Attractions such as the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the MCG and the inaugural Pro Kabaddi League Melbourne Raid event, helped boost Indian tourist numbers.
“Our focus on international, particularly the Indian market, is reaping rewards,” said Visit Victoria chief executive Brendan McClements of the results.
“We’re proud to continue to support the growth of visitors, through tourism initiatives like the recent Indian inbound trade missions and major event support in cricket and kabaddi.”
