Lalor MP Julia Gillard can expect to be under the hammer in the coming months, following her selection as Opposition spokesperson for population and immigration. The position – arguable the toughest in the present climate of international unrest and given Australia’s difficulties with border protection and the processing of refugees – has elevated the 40-year-old former Slater and Gordon partner straight into the shadow cabinet.
