A new business is offering scholarships to help disadvantaged people across Wyndham get their driver’s licence.
Ability 2 Drive has set up shop in Hoppers Crossing and has more than 20 scholarships on offer for people aged 16 to 60, enabling them to get their learner’s permit, gain their 120 hours of driving experience and take their probationary licence tests – all paid for.
The program specialises in assisting learner drivers who have special learning needs or disabilities, or who have been disadvantaged.
Founder Dion Griffin launched Ability 2 Drive in Warrnambool a year ago and now has offices at Geelong, Braybrook and, most recently, Hoppers Crossing.
Mr Griffin, who has been a youth worker for 12 years, also plans to open branches in Hamilton, Ballarat, Melton, Camperdown, Bendigo and Colac.
He said about 120 students had completed the program so far.
“We’ve had many participants, some having previously failed their licence up to eight times, join our program and finally be successful in gaining their full licence and finding employment,” he said.
Mr Griffin said that in his experience as a youth worker, not having a licence was a major impediment for people looking for work or to get to their studies.
