The Werribee River Trail was flooded with runners on the weekend, as 700 people made their way to the track for the Wyndham Rotary Fun Run.

Brett Ellis, of Bacchus Marsh, took the title in the 10km run, finishing in 32 minutes and 59 seconds. Werribee’s Lori Fraser earned bragging rights for the women, finishing in 43 minutes and 56 seconds.

Wyndham Rotary’s Max Coster said the number of participants were up 17 per cent on the previous year, which goes against the trend of declining numbers in runs across Melbourne.

The Werribee Hockey Club was named winners of the corporate challenge, with 32 competitors across a range of events.

Mr Coster said the club set itself a target of improving community health through engaging the local community, and the high turn-out showed the goal was achieved.

“Citizens of Wyndham are getting off the couch and taking to gyms, walking and running. We hope they keep it up and better their times next year,” he said.

The event is a fundraiser for the Royal Childrens Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Mr Coster said while funds raised are being finalised, he expects around $20,000 was raised.

The fun run has raised more than $60,000 for the appeal over the past nine years.
