Hospital welcomes funding

Werribee Mercy hospital has welcomed the state government’s commitment to providing $236 million for the expansion of emergency departments, announced in the state budget on Tuesday, May 4.

The funding will be shared with Casey hospital in Berwick and is intended to serve some of Victoria’s fastest growing cities.

Mercy Health Group chief executive adjunct professor Stephen Cornelissen said the money is an “acknowledgement of the pressing needs of the community”.

“We have regularly highlighted not only the population growth of the city of Wyndham and western corridor but also our ageing infrastructure and the growing pressure on our emergency staff,” Mr Cornelissen said.

Mr Cornelissen said the community had been calling for a commitment to growing Werribee Mercy Hospital.

“This announcement delivers one of the essential building blocks of a future hospital which is expected to deliver more than 90 per cent of all hospital care for the half a million people who will make Wyndham home over the next ten years,” he said.

“As a result Wyndham families can look forward to the opening of a vastly enhanced ED at WMH sooner than anticipated.”
