The Koala Clancy Foundation has urged Wyndham residents to join its tree-planting events designed to help koalas survive in the wild.
Koala expert and foundation president Janine Duffy said that two Community Koala Tree Planting days would be held later this year, in the You Yangs near Little River.
“Koalas in the You Yangs and Brisbane Ranges need our help,” Ms Duffy said.
“It’s getting hotter and drier in the west, and every summer it gets harder for koalas to survive.
“Koala Clancy Foundation has a plan to save Werribee’s closest wild koalas – working closely with farmers and Landcare, we are planting special koala trees in the places that koalas need them most.
“What we need is many hands to plant, and local hands are the best.”
Ms Duffy said the events allowed participants to plant trees in pre-dug holes for around 1.5 to two hours, and that the rest of the day involved a nature walk and education with a koala expert.
The planting days will be held on July 14 and August 18. The meeting place for the planting days is the Little River Hotel, 10/14 Flinders Street, from where the planting group will travel to the location in the You Yangs.
Cost: Children $20, adults $30. Participants must also bring their own lunch, but trees, stakes, guards, hammers and gloves are all provided.
