Wyndham council is inviting the public to provide feedback on the draft onsite wastewater management Plan 2025-30, which manages onsite wastewater from septic tanks and treatment systems.
Onsite wastewater management systems need to be maintained or they can leak harmful contaminants into creeks, groundwater, and soil, causing pollution, bad odours, and potential health risks, council said.
Under Victorian law, all councils must develop an onsite wastewater management plan to ensure these systems are properly maintained and managed.
The feedback will help inform measures to maintain public health and the environment by improving wastewater management in un-sewered areas, as well as identify and reduce risks associated with wastewater issues in the community.
Mayor Mia Shaw said while the majority of homes were connected to sewerage systems, there were parts of Wyndham where septic tanks and treatment systems were still in place, such as some properties in Werribee South, Little River and larger allotments in Hoppers Crossing.
“Council has a statutory duty under the Environment Protection Act 2017, when regulating onsite wastewater management systems. This means that some of the key action items in our Onsite Wastewater Management Plan cannot be altered but we welcome feedback,” she said.
